Setting Up Granular Unsubscribes/Subscribes
Setting Up Granular Unsubscribes/Subscribes
A granular unsubscribe system effectively 'unsubscribes' contacts from a specific campaign or marketing initiative without unsubscribing from all email messages.
You may set up a granular unsubscribe/subscribe system by moving contacts who choose an unsubscribe option on a form into a suppression list.
Please note: This method does NOT unsubscribe contacts from your database. Instead, contacts are removed from a campaign (or marketing initiative) of your choosing by adding the contacts into their campaign suppression list.
What is a suppression list?
A suppression list is a contact list like any other, except its used as a list of people you won't be contacting. You add a suppression list to your campaigns to effectively stop communication with them for a specific campaign.
A suppression list itself is added to the campaign initially on the 'overview' tab.
As contacts submit the form with the unsubscribe option, they are added to this list immediately by the autoresponder. This effectively stops communication with the contact for the specific campaign the form is associated with.
This method may be useful in situations where you would like to give contacts the option of unsubscribing from a specific marketing effort only.
Below, we will set up a granular unsubscribe method for a newsletter campaign by submitting a form.
1) Select an Unsubscribe Template
You have multiple unsubscribe templates set up in your account under Assets => Page Template Library.
Choose an unsubscribe page template and publish it. You may also create your own landing page from scratch along with a form if you wish.
2) Edit the Form Autoresponder
As these templates have forms on them already, you may simply navigate to the form by selecting the edit icon within the opened landing page builder after selecting a template.
Once inside the form builder, navigate to the Autoresponder and use an 'Add To List' action to add contacts who submit this form into a static contact list you have created to use as a suppression list.
Tip: You may also set up a dynamic list in your database that looks for this form submit. The result would be the same as this autoresponder set up. If you decide to set up a dynamic list, you may skip this step and create a dynamic contact list instead.
3) Add the Suppression List to Your Campaign
Now that we have created a list and defined it within the autoresponder, we can add the list to our campaign overview:
4) Finished!
Now, when you create an email for your campaign, you may link to the published page URL with the form you created. Upon submission, the contact will be added to the suppression list, and removed from communication for the campaign.
